Images for finals series (Not in order)

Plan for final shoot

  • Re-do the landscape photograph shot from above looking down in people walking - make it portrait and get higher to look more directly down
  • Try a few different shots looking through the glass including a bit of glass framing from outside in into the space - get the patterns on the wall and a person
  • Re-do the rail portrait with person - check framing
  • Maybe try another rail shot to tie in with one above? If doesn't work then can hopefully leave it as one.
  • Try another 'symmetrical' one looking down through the tunnel

Technical exercise 1: PANORAMA

Final Images from shoot two

I thinnk this image is successful, I like how I was able to capture the legs (both also being visible) and still have the shutter speed low enough to show the movement of the figure (the blurring round the knees). The long depth of field shows the length of the space and the lines of tiles guide the eye down the space. The contrast between blacks and whites are good and it's a happy coincidence that the shoe is almost directly on top of the line which adds more focus to the photograph.

This is a portrait version of the one above, I'm hoping to decide to pick which one will fit my series better (whether it goes more landscape or portrait). Both I think are equally successful. What I like specifically about this image is the exit sign and an arrow pointing in the direction the person is travelling. It is identification/reminder that this is a subway and could tie my series together well, as this is a picture which shows only a narrow piece of the space and could otherwise sit lost in my series.

Even though this is a typical deep narrow shot of a tunnel, I really like this shot. I believe it has some originallity. It clearly shows the beauty of the geometric patterns on the walls of the subway and I really like the added detail at the stop of the photo (the shape of the subway ceiling). The light down the centre of the picture makes the picture not only look very symmetrical but I think adds a 3D effect so it doesn't look so flat. This is a really classically designed subway and I think this photo effectively shows the beauty, yet still focussing on an arrea within the general space. I am however not totally convinced it would be able to fit in with my series well because it could look a little too flat against the other images and it doesn't have a person in it which I think could be a major focus as to what ties my images together.

This is one of my favourite shots. I love the curvy and unstructured reflections in the glass and how that contrasts with the structured lines of the glass framing and classical design interior. The focus lies equally with the bright round light and the space of the subway. I think that adding the person into the frame adds imporatant detail by carrying the theme of people within my photos and the part of my proposal which is on how people use the space.

1st photoshoot final three images

I think this is a successful style of shot which may fit into my final series, but this paricular shot needs to be re-taken. The framing needs to be straighter, I need to get up higher (so use a step ladder), make it a portrait photo (so change my postion) and maybe I can get 3 people in my shot again because I quite like the composition and placement of the people. I love the floor tiles, they are geometric and have great texture with a subtle pattern.

I think this is a great shot as it shows off the space as well as the lines of the hand rail, geometric shapes and colour. Ties well also with the picture that focusses on the glass roof as you can see it in this photo. This photo, even though it is portrait still shows a sense of depth within the subway and the figure in this shot emphasises and supports my concept of how the people within the space use it. I do however need too re-take this photo to get the postioning of the rail framed and squared appropriately.

Proposal, 1st shoot contact sheet with notes and research with artist models

Proposal:

I have found the subway I pass through every day has become a space which is overlooked. The architect Le Corbusier described a house a 'a machine for living in', architecture would be as efficient as a factory assembly line. I believe Le Corbusier's theory can be applied to how society treats the modern day under-ground subway. People live their lives travelling to and from work, most using public transport and their local subway to get to it. From observation, people overlook this space they travel through; rushing, faces are forward looking and clutching their bags in search for the exits. They know the route they need to take, but it is simply just a path to transport or to home. I found that my local subway (Waterloo) is a place of simplistic beauty where geometric shapes, edgy straight lines and symmetry of interesting forms surrounds you. The photographs I take for this assignment will focus on the beauty of the space and at the same time showing an aura/presence of a person or people which shows the way people use the space.

Techniques:

Slow shutter speed: Creating mood which reflects the essence of how you feel walking through the space. Shows the movement and rush of people while focussing on parts of the space which is overlooked

Lighting: The flurescent bright lights in the subway, turned on when it becomes dark, gives a sharp contrast between the blacks and whites. It gives a stark sharp edgy mood to the photographs and highlights the form of space.

Long depth of field: Shows the length and width of the subway. Shows the whole space and what is in it.
